The Pitch

The Pitch

Chris Murphy · 12 December, 2020

Your pitch will evolve over time, just as your life evolves. It’s useful to retain past pitches so you can see how your thinking has evolved.

I’m gathering the various pitches I’ve used over the last six months, during my time on Propel. They act as a shorthand for how The School of Design has evolved its focus. Here are the big changes:

  • at the start, my business was called designtrack and its focus was teaching UX +/ UI;
  • now the business is called The School of Design and its focus is teaching design-focused entrepreneurs how to design and build the businesses of tomorrow.

I've only just started this file, but I'm gathering as I go.

Post-Propel Pitch

When I was on Propel, I dropped × life from the design × business × life equation. I put it back in, thanks to an email newsletter I sent (on life) that resonated with my subscribers.

The reality is that life is an integral part of everything we do. We can’t set it to one side. So, the school is very much focused on design × business × life.

One thing we can do as a community is support each other through thick and thin and that sometimes involves the challenges life throws at us.

Propel Month 6 Pitch

The Propel team had a very specific approach towards building pitch decks. This was my final deck (14 June, 2020).

The Propel team had a very specific approach towards building pitch decks. I'll share what I learned from that in a separate file in The Pitch, shortly. For now, the broad brushstrokes (top to bottom) were: 1. Brand; 2. Pitch; 3. Founder(s) Portrait; 4. Name; 5. Role; 6. Contact Email.

The School of Design is a community for design-focused entrepreneurs, building the products of tomorrow.

Although design × business × life is critical to my mission, I felt it was confusing when I pitched the school. (I can explain that in more depth when you're in the fold.) I've also found – in practice – that I'm working primarily with design-focused entrepreneurs.

The majority of the people I've been mentoring understand design and want to use their understanding of design to build a product. That product might have service aspects, but constantly referring to products and services is, again, confusing.

Our mission at designtrack is to help individuals and businesses understand the importance of the intersection of design × business × life, positioning it at the heart of their purpose.

All three of these – design × business × life – are important and the magic happens when you align them. A core part of the courses, workshops and lectures we run will show our founders how to do this.

The market for UX designers is growing exponentially year on year. Companies like Slack and Instagram are desperate for team-focused digital designers who understand human-centred design and design thinking. I’ve taught tens of thousands of students over two decades. My graduates are employed in leadership positions all over the world and they’re highly paid too! If you’d like to follow in their footsteps. I’ll show you how.
