Every single business I’ve run – whether it’s my independent record label, my ticketing company or The School of Design – has always been built around a ‘people like me’ niche.
There are 7.6 Billion people on earth.If we embrace Kevin Kelly’s 1,000 True Fans model for establishing (and comfortably living off) a creative business, then it’s statistically likely there are 1,000 other people ‘just like me’ in the world:
- there must be at least 1,000 other people who appreciate leftfield experimental music;
- there must be at least 1,000 other people who find Eventbrite’s interface confusing; and
- there must be at least 1,000 other people who want to learn design × business in a creative community that’s not an expensive art school.
Building a business that’s targeted towards 1,000 other ‘people like me’ has worked for me many times and it can work for you, too.
